Scene 10: Dog animation

I finished animating the dog into scene 10! I am pretty happy with how it turned out in the end, even though it's not amazing!

Scene 16: Final test

The final blocking for scene 16

Scene 16 tests

The tests for scene 16, getting the head movements right! This ended up working ok in the end, so all that needs to be done is the resizing

Girl riding on the dog 3

These are the last 3 clips of tests for this section. It's not perfect, but I think that it will work ok for what I want it for! Now that I have this I can continue to animate the next scene!

Girl riding on the dog 2

More animation tests for the girl riding the dog. I ended up focusing on getting each aspect right, so I took away the arms to focus on the legs first, and then I moved to trying to get the arms right!

Girl riding on the dog

For the next scene I had to have the girl riding the dog, and as there is another scene with this in I figured i'd hit two birds with one stone and animate the entire thing. These clips are the first three attempts. I quickly realised that the dogs neck moved too much and the girl looked way too stiff and cut out.

Scene 42: Test 2

Scene 42 with the correct size!

Scene 42: Test 1

First animation test for scene 42. It's a lot smaller, but I wanted to get the movement down before I put it to the right size!

Dog blowing in the wind

Loop of the dogs ears, tail and fur blowing in the wind! I can use this for two separate scenes, so I figured i'd get it out of the way (though I mainly did it for scene 9)

Scene 32: Test 4

Scene 32 with the dog animation too!

Scene 32: Test 3

I animated the walk to move with the rest of the animation (the background is black because I saved the frames as PNGs rather than jpegs so I could overlap stuff...) The obvious issue is that when the cycle loops, she looks like she's crossing her feet, which I will fix at the detail stage.

Scene 32: Test 2

An update of the previous clip with some more inbetweens!

Scene 32: Test 1

After I got the arm movement right I began to animate the rest of the scene!

Scene 32: Walk cycle 2

The second attempt at the walk cycle! This one worked a lot better, so now I am going to add the arms!

Scene 32: Walk cycle

I wanted to get the walk cycle down for thisscene before animating the rest of it. This one didn't work very well because it doesn't move up and down...

Dog walk cycle

After the run cycle, I decided to animate a walk cycle too, because it would also be needed for various scenes, and I had been neglecting the dog side of the animation greatly..... This clip is the result of many failures, all of which I didn't end up saving. I ended up referencing Pongo from 101 Dalmatians for the walk cycle, which helped a lot! It's not a perfect walk cycle, but I think that it is acceptable for what I will use it for!

Dog run cycle: Test 4

I fixed the back and the head, and it ended up looking a lot better. It's still not perfect, but I have decided to leave it as I have spent too long on this now anyway, and I need to move on!

Dog run cycle: Test 3

I cleaned up the run cycle, and realised that something looked a little off..... After asking other peoples advice, I realised that the back didn't bend enough, and the head was very stationary and needed to move more!

Dog run cycle: Test 2

The second run cycle test. I flipped it round to the way it needs to be, and made sure the proportions were right.

Dog run cycle

I took a break from actual scenes because I wanted to animate the dog run cycle, which is needed a lot in the film anyway. This was my first attempt at the run cycle! I actually referenced a cat, and did my best to make it less bendy... it didn't turn out too bad at all, considering i've never animated a dog before..

Scene 20: Test 4

The final blocking for scene 20. I am pretty happy with how it turned out in the end!

Scene 20: Test 3

From those thumbnails I began to block out the animation very roughly. I am pretty happy with how it is turning out, though the landing still needs a lot of work!

Scene 20: Test 2

I had planned to give up on this scene, but I ended up thumbnailing it digitally at home and finding that it worked a lot better! There are still some issues with the landing especially, but these thumbnails were definitely easier to work with than the previous test!

Scene 20: Test 1

This is another scene that promised to be difficult. This was my first test and it didn't go very well at all. I ended up giving up because it was frustrating me, and I planned to return to it once I have a few more scenes under my belt!

Scene 27: Test 1

Here is the actual test for scene 27. Not entirely hapy with it. She looks like her feet are sliding backwards, and the hug doesn't have much impact, as I have no yet animated the dog. I don;t want to spend more time on this scene at this point though, and I plan to correct this scene in the digital stage.

Scene 27: Run test 2

The second attempt at the run cycle. This one worked a lot better, and while it isn't perfect, I am going to use this to animate my scene.

Scene 27: Run test

Before I animated this scene I wanted to get a good run cycle down. Here was my first attempt. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't great either.

Feedback from a graduate

A student who graduated a few years ago came into uni today to give me some feedback on my work so far. It went pretty well and I came away from it feeling pretty positive. He pointed out a few errors that I had missed on previous scenes, all of which can be fixed at the digital stage. He also agreed that it would be best to stick to blocking first, so I can get the animation itself pretty solid, before putting the details on. He also pointed out that as long as the animation can tell the story, and you know what's going on, it doesn't matter what stage the animation is at. We then went onto work out how many seconds of animation I need to do per day to get this film finished, which was a bot of a downer, but hopefully I can get it done in time!

Scene 33: Test 3

The inbetweened version of the previous test. I'm not completely happy with it! There is no weight in the crawl and the eyes move around too much and the volume changes. However, all of these things can be changed at the digital stage

Scene 33: Test 2

After the previous thumbnails I began to put more of the movement into the scene. With this scene I tried animating the details at the same time, to see if it might make things go quicker as I am worried about time!

Scene 33: Test 1

I began scene 33 on Monday, which was pretty difficult because I couldn't find any reference anywhere, and I left my camera at home. I decided to wing it and see what happened, and it didn't turn out too bad, though at this stage it still needed a lot of work.

Scene 10: Detailing 1

I began to detail Scene 10 on Sunday, but I am not very pleased with the results so far, so i'll probably just start over. I encounteres a few problems and forgot some vital animation points such as emotion change, which is probably my downfall doing animation digitally.

Scene 9: Lineart

The finished lineart for scene 9. I got her to stop too, though it is very sudden!  I also coloured in a few frames to show any potential colourists what to do!

Scene 9: Test 17

After scanning in this scene to fix it digitally, I went ahead and detailed it out over the weekend! It turned out pretty well and I am closer to getting the scene ready for colouring!
